About

After completing a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship in 2014 I decided to travel the world and reasses what I wanted from life. Along this journey I was fortunate with many opportunities such as dealing poker in the Bahamas, teaching English in Vietnam, streaming video games from Malaysia and driving trucks in Australia.

Quite a few years later I found myself back in the UK studying to be a full stack developer in the midst of the pandemic. I've always held a deep interest in technology and the internet so learning how to make things work myself has only made me want to know more. After almost 3 years of full time work as a full stack developer I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the languages I'm using and furthering my career!

Experience

The intensive online training I undertook in 2021 gave me a solid grounding in HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP & SQL as well as the use of git/github version control. I then spent 18 months building webapps for the transport industry with VueJs, Vuetify & Vuex specifically. In this time I became very familiar with state management and component based web design, as well as how to achieve professional UX implementations. I also had exposure to designing backend solutions to support my front end builds, namely through the use of MongoDB, Axios and GraphQL. I gained good experience working with real time maps such as Leaflet, Turf.js and the Google maps API.

At the beginning of 2024 I took on a new development role building in house software solutions for a large UK food manufacturer. Mainly focused on React frontend and .NET + EF Core backend builds, I have had the opportunity to learn a lot in a short space of time including the use of Azure DevOps and containerisation.

Online English Teacher

Jan 2020 - Apr 2021
Taught English as a second language online, first from my apartment in Hanoi, Vietnam, then as the pandemic began, I moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Online teaching was extremely satisfying and rewarding. Watching regular students improve their language skills with me is something I will remember forever. Some students were already at a high level of English speaking, allowing the lessons to be more like casual conversation, learning about each other's countries and cultures. I was responsible for making and organising my own lessons, held via webcam, whilst setting curriculum dependent on each student's needs and abilities.
